Our Story
In 2017, Gord Leighton and others saw a need for an additional radio station to provide local ON AIR programming for the greater Vernon area. So they founded the Vernon Community Radio Society.
Since that time, the society has gotten an approved FM radio frequency, studio space, and broadcasting equipment. In addition, Valleyfm.ca has been streaming content (and a growing list of local programs) online over the past year.
Valley FM is now taking the dream of a locally focused radio station into reality and will soon start broadcasting on 97.9 FM ON AIR!

About Us
97.9 Valley FM is about bringing us all together.
We are locally-focused radio: local talk, news, music, news/interviews nurture a vibrant, friendly, informed community.
As we go ON AIR we will be able to become a vital part of our city offering live news coverage of local stories and more. Last year’s wildfires reminded us of the necessity for 24/7 live broadcasting of news!
We provide quality air-time support and advertising and promotional opportunities for Vernon businesses–from exciting startups to established community-minded businesses.
We provide broadcasting and promotional support for local sports and recreation as well as festivals, arts, and culture.
We give volunteer and learning (student) opportunities for careers in radio broadcasting, IT, writing, promotion, and more.
We understand that we have much work to do to establish the kind of programming, learning, quality, and advertising for which we are reaching here. But we believe that through this kind of local focus we can build a type of community radio that brings us together and is a vital part of the media landscape of our city.

Power The Tower
We need to raise funds to purchase and install the radio transmitter on our tower so that we can go ON AIR and and thereby build a community radio station in Vernon of which we can all be proud.
The CRTC has given us until September 1, 2024 to complete this long running and living project. This to say, if we do not get ON AIR by that time, we will lose our license and related 97.9 FM community radio station.
